DJI RS 5 Raises the Bar for Gimbal Stabilization with Intelligent Tracking and Rapid Charging

DJI has officially announced the RS 5 gimbal stabilizer, expanding its Ronin lineup with a new model designed to streamline modern production workflows.

Built for professional filmmakers and high-end content creators, the RS 5 introduces intelligent subject tracking, fifth-generation stabilization, and significantly improved battery performance in a lightweight, high-payload design.

Build with a maximum payload capacity of 3 kg (6.6 lb) while remaining remarkably lightweight, the RS 5 delivers high-end stabilization with modern enhancements that support diverse shooting scenarios.

One of the most notable advancements on the RS 5 is its enhanced intelligent tracking system.

With the optional RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module, users can select and lock subjects directly from the gimbal’s touchscreen, enabling reliable subject tracking without needing external devices.

This functionality tracks people, vehicles, pets, and more, and is capable of reacquiring targets even if they briefly leave the frame.

This real-time framing and tracking capability streamlines solo shoots and dynamic productions, reducing reliance on camera assistants or external tracking setups.

Next-Gen Stabilization and Z-Axis Integration

The RS 5 also introduces DJI’s fifth-generation stabilization algorithm, which, combined with a new Z-axis indicator, helps minimize vertical jitter that typically occurs during walk-and-talk shots.

While the Z-axis feature primarily provides visual feedback to guide smoother operator motion, the indicator is a valuable tool on set for achieving more cinematic moves without adding complex accessories.

Fine-tuning knobs with Teflon-enhanced interlayers on each axis arm allow precise balancing even with heavier rigs, speeding up setup and reducing downtime.

Runtime, Charging, and On-Set Efficiency

Filmmakers often face long shooting days, and the RS 5 addresses this with fast charging and extended battery life.

Using a 65 W PD charger, the gimbal can fully recharge in about 1 hour, significantly cutting downtime between setups.

With the standard BG33 battery grip, the RS 5 can achieve about 14 hours of runtime, and this extends up to 30 hours with the optional high-capacity BG70 battery grip.

Additionally, second-generation automated axis locks and a quick-open tripod with linked-leg design help operators transition from transport to shooting rapidly without fumbling with complex hardware.

In today’s content landscape, vertical video is increasingly important.

The RS 5 introduces a third-generation native vertical shooting mode, enabling filmmakers to switch between horizontal and vertical orientation swiftly without rebalancing.

This supports fast transitions when delivering content for social platforms or portrait-focused narratives.

Modes like Pan Follow, Pan/Tilt Follow, and first-person POV further expand creative possibilities without adding external motion systems.

The RS 5’s design includes support for camera control via Bluetooth and USB-C, expanding interoperability with select Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras alongside existing Sony, Canon, and Nikon support.

Integrated controls and compatibility with DJI’s Focus Pro Motors and SDR Transmission system allow remote focus adjustment and live video feeds, enhancing control during challenging shots.

For professional filmmakers and content creators seeking a robust, adaptable, and intelligent stabilization platform, the DJI RS 5 Gimbal offers a compelling combination of advanced tracking, ergonomic design, extended runtime, and creative flexibility.

Its thoughtful feature set supports both cinematic workflows and high-volume content production.
