Nikon has officially introduced the Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II, a second-generation telephoto zoom that significantly reduces weight while introducing a revised optical design and upgraded autofocus system.
For filmmakers and hybrid shooters working inside the Z-mount ecosystem, this update is more than cosmetic – it directly impacts handheld balance, gimbal operation, and subject tracking performance.
This lens replaces the original Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S with a leaner chassis and a redesigned internal structure aimed at improving both speed and usability.

One of the headline improvements is weight. The new version weighs approximately 998 g (without tripod collar) – about 26 percent lighter than the original model.
The lens is also slightly shorter than its predecessor, further improving center-of-gravity placement on mirrorless bodies.
The Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II features an updated optical design consisting of 18 elements in 16 groups, a streamlined configuration compared to the previous generation.
Specialized elements include:
- 1 SR element
- 1 fluorite element
- 2 Super ED elements
- 2 ED elements
- 3 aspherical elements
This structure is designed to suppress chromatic aberrations, reduce color fringing at telephoto focal lengths, and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness across the zoom range.

Nikon also incorporates Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat to combat ghosting and flare, particularly useful in high-contrast backlit environments common in narrative and live event work.
A major upgrade comes in the form of Nikon’s Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (VCM) multi-focus system.
According to Nikon, autofocus performance is approximately 3.5 times faster than the previous version, subject tracking performance is improved which makes focus transitions smoother and quieter.

The lens delivers up to 6 stops of vibration reduction when paired with compatible Nikon Z bodies using Synchro VR.
Minimum focusing distances are 0.38 m at 70mm and 0.8 m at 200mm respectively.
Furthermore, the internal zoom construction ensures the lens does not extend during operation, helping maintain balance on stabilizers and reducing exposure to dust and moisture.
The Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is not a minor refresh – it is a measurable redesign that prioritizes reduced weight, faster autofocus performance, and optical refinement.
For professionals building lighter mirrorless production systems without sacrificing telephoto performance, this lens represents a meaningful evolution within Nikon’s S-line lineup.
