iPhone enthusiasts who prefer the non-Pro models are in for some exciting upgrades in the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. These devices promise to offer a dynamic experience with the inclusion of the “Dynamic Island.” This intriguing feature has generated mixed reactions among users, but it’s undoubtedly a noteworthy addition.
Additionally, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will step up their photography game with a 48MP image sensor backing the primary Wide camera. This was previously exclusive to the Pro models, making the non-Pro devices even more appealing to photography enthusiasts.
However, Apple always reserves some premium features for its Pro models, like the Tetraprism periscope lens for 5x optical zoom, which will remain limited to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, with rumors suggesting it may arrive on the iPhone 16 Pro in the next release cycle. Nonetheless, there’s good news for fans of the ProMotion display, as it will soon grace the non-Pro models, offering a smoother 120Hz refresh rate.
According to Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the future holds more surprises. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, slated for 2025, will make a significant leap by introducing a 120Hz refresh rate to non-Pro iPhone models. This is a remarkable upgrade, considering that current non-Pro iPhones feature a 60Hz refresh rate, half that of the Pro models with ProMotion displays.
Young’s roadmap also reveals that screen sizes and aspect ratios will undergo minor adjustments. The iPhone 16, set for next year, will feature a 6.12-inch display, and its Plus counterpart will have a 6.69-inch screen, matching the specs of the current non-Pro iPhone 15 models. However, in 2025, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will slightly alter their dimensions, boasting screens of 6.27 inches and 6.86 inches, respectively.
Another fascinating development is the shift from Low-Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) to low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) displays. This switch, Young believes, is a precursor to the arrival of ProMotion displays on the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus, which will offer adaptive refresh rates for improved battery life.
However, these enhancements come with a slight aspect ratio change to 19.6:9. In contrast, the Pro models, like the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, will keep their current features, with minor adjustments in aspect ratio.
For those who appreciate Dynamic Island, it’s important to note that, according to Young’s predictions, the 2025 Pro models might bid adieu to this feature, while the non-Pro models will continue to enjoy it. The future of the iPhone lineup appears promising, with a more even distribution of advanced features across various models, catering to a broader range of preferences and budgets. As always, Apple’s innovation continues to drive excitement and anticipation in the tech world.
