Meta Introduces Instagram and Facebook Profile Sync to WhatsApp
Meta is adding a new feature to WhatsApp that will bring its family of apps even closer together. According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp users will soon be able to import their profile pictures directly from Instagram or Facebook.
This upcoming feature was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.25.21.23. It has already started rolling out to some beta testers, with a broader release expected over the coming weeks.
How the Profile Picture Sync Works
The new functionality is designed to be straightforward. When users go to their WhatsApp profile settings to edit their profile photo, they’ll now see two additional options—Instagram and Facebook. Until now, users could set their profile picture by taking a photo, selecting one from the gallery, using an avatar, or generating an AI image. With this update, users will also be able to sync their profile picture directly from their Instagram or Facebook account, making it easier to maintain consistency across Meta’s platforms.
Theoretically, this new feature could simplify things for users who no longer have access to a photo they had previously set as their profile picture on Facebook or Instagram. Instead of resorting to taking screenshots—which often reduces image quality—they’ll be able to sync the same photo directly to WhatsApp, preserving its clarity and consistency across Meta platforms.
To use this feature, users will need to link their WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook accounts through the Meta Accounts Center, if they haven’t already done so. Meta introduced the ability to add WhatsApp to its Accounts Center earlier this year, and since then, several updates have been rolled out to enhance cross-platform integration.
For example, users can now share their Instagram Stories directly to WhatsApp and vice versa. Business users also benefit from this integration, as they can add a WhatsApp contact button to their Instagram profile, making it easier for potential customers to reach them directly via WhatsApp.
