Apple TV+ recently started teasing its summer lineup, including new seasons on the way for some of its biggest hits. Today, Apple has also announced a brand new show coming soon: Smoke, from the creative team behind one of its best reviewed series ever.
Smoke is a new Apple TV+ series from the team behind Black Bird
Among the lineup of Apple TV+ series that have earned significant critical acclaim, one of the top shows has long been Black Bird.
The 2022 limited series earned an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, plus several nominations and wins at the Golden Globes and Emmy Awards.
Now, the creative team behind Black Bird is reuniting with a new crime drama coming soon to Apple TV+.
Smoke will premiere on Friday, June 27 with its first two episodes, followed by weekly releases through August 8.
Apple’s series summary is vague, but the show is based on the Firebug podcast, and I found its pitch really compelling:
For ten years, a serial arsonist terrorized Southern California, burning down businesses in broad daylight. Four people were murdered. Then, a manuscript for a novel led investigators to the last person they would have ever suspected.

Black Bird’s creator, Dennis Lehane, returns in the same role for Smoke alongside the same returning director team. Smoke also features the same lead actor, Taron Egerton, and supporting actor Greg Kinnear.
The rest of the cast looks stacked too, with Emmy Award nominees Jurnee Smollett and Anna Chlumsky, Emmy winner John Leguizamo, and more.
If you enjoyed Black Bird, Smoke looks like it has the potential to replicate that show’s critical success.
