Clarification on OnePlus Watch 3 Update Support
Initially, OnePlus had stated that the OnePlus Watch 3 would only receive two years of security updates, which led to disappointment and frustration among users. However, OnePlus has since clarified this, confirming that both the OnePlus Watch 2 and Watch 3 will receive three years of quarterly security updates. This was a simple miscommunication, and the updated information is much more reassuring for potential buyers.
Software Update Commitment
In addition to security updates, OnePlus has also promised three years of software updates for both the Watch 2 and Watch 3. However, this does not mean three major version updates. The OnePlus Watch 2, which launched with Wear OS 4, will stop at Wear OS 6 by 2026. Similarly, the OnePlus Watch 3 will eventually get Wear OS 7 in 2027. This level of software support is comparable to the Pixel Watch 3, which also guarantees three years of security updates.
OnePlus Watch 3 vs. Competitors: Security Support and Software Updates
When compared to other Wear OS devices, the OnePlus Watch 3 aligns with the Pixel Watch 3 in terms of security updates, both offering three years of support. However, the Pixel Watch 3 will receive one additional version update and generally faster support. In contrast, Samsung offers four years of both version and security updates for its Galaxy Watches. Despite this, the OnePlus Watch 3 still shines in one area: its exceptional battery life. It offers up to five days per charge, significantly outlasting both Google and Samsung’s devices in longevity.
The Improved Appeal of the OnePlus Watch 3
The initial two-year security support made the OnePlus Watch 3 less appealing, especially when other brands like Google, Samsung, and Apple were offering longer update cycles. With the miscommunication resolved, the Watch 3 is now a much more attractive option for Android users. However, it still lags behind Google and Samsung when it comes to version updates. The Watch 2 and 2R are expected to receive Wear OS 5 between July and September, a year after Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra launched with the same update. Although this delay has become typical for third-party Wear OS devices, getting updates later is certainly better than never.
A Less Chaotic OnePlus Watch 3 Launch
The OnePlus Watch 3 launch was clouded by some mishaps. Early on, the device drew attention due to a “Meda in China” typo on the back of the watch, which led to some lighthearted mockery. In response, OnePlus delayed the release to April to fix the typo and included an apology letter with the first batch of devices. While most users likely wouldn’t have noticed this tiny error, it reflected the rocky start for the Watch 3.
Ongoing Improvements for the OnePlus Watch 3
Despite the initial hiccups, OnePlus has shown commitment to improving the Watch 3. They’ve acknowledged two key issues with the current model and are working to address them this year. The 1.5-inch display on the Watch 3 may be too large for some wrists, and OnePlus is developing a smaller model to cater to this concern. Additionally, OnePlus is engaging with carriers to bring LTE cellular support to their watches outside of China.
The OnePlus Watch 3’s Strong Features
Despite the launch issues and critiques, the OnePlus Watch 3 still offers significant features that make it a competitive choice in the Android smartwatch market. These include its eye-friendly display, impressive battery life, and fast charging capabilities. The upgrades from the Watch 2 to the Watch 3 are substantial enough that it is now considered one of the best Android smartwatches available.
