According to Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the future holds more surprises. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, slated for 2025, will make a significant leap by introducing a 120Hz refresh rate to non-Pro iPhone models. This is a remarkable upgrade, considering that current non-Pro iPhones feature a 60Hz refresh rate, half that of the Pro models with ProMotion displays.
Young’s roadmap also reveals that screen sizes and aspect ratios will undergo minor adjustments. The iPhone 16, set for next year, will feature a 6.12-inch display, and its Plus counterpart will have a 6.69-inch screen, matching the specs of the current non-Pro iPhone 15 models. However, in 2025, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will slightly alter their dimensions, boasting screens of 6.27 inches and 6.86 inches, respectively.
Another fascinating development is the shift from Low-Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) to low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) displays. This switch, Young believes, is a precursor to the arrival of ProMotion displays on the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus, which will offer adaptive refresh rates for improved battery life.
However, these enhancements come with a slight aspect ratio change to 19.6:9. In contrast, the Pro models, like the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, will keep their current features, with minor adjustments in aspect ratio.
