Ben Wood, Chief Analyst at CCS Insight, noted that “The Barbie phone taps into the current digital detox trend with a fun design that could have broad appeal.” He also pointed out that while many consumers might be tempted to purchase the phone for its novelty, the pervasive reliance on smartphones could limit the effectiveness of any extended digital detox.

HMD has been a key player in the mobile industry since 2016, when it acquired the Nokia mobile brand from Microsoft through a deal involving electronics supplier Foxconn Technology. This acquisition allowed HMD to produce and sell Nokia-branded devices, leveraging the strong market presence of the Nokia name.

Earlier this year, HMD rebranded as Human Mobile Devices, marking a new phase in its evolution. Despite the rebranding, Nokia continues to earn royalty payments from the sales of devices bearing its name, which are manufactured and marketed by HMD.
