Nikon ZR Firmware 1.10 Update Brings Long-Form Recording and Pro Workflow Enhancements

Nikon continues to push its cinema ambitions forward with the release of Firmware 1.10 for the Nikon ZR, a compact cinema-oriented camera designed specifically for professional video production.

Already positioned as a serious tool for filmmakers, documentary shooters, and high-end content creators, the ZR gains several meaningful improvements with this update that directly impact real-world shooting and post-production workflows.

Before diving into what’s new, it’s worth revisiting why the Nikon ZR has attracted attention among professional shooters.

The camera is built around a RED-designed 6K image sensor, supporting internal R3D NE 12-bit recording, advanced log workflows, and a compact form factor suitable for gimbals, rigs, and handheld operation.

Firmware 1.10 builds directly on these strengths, addressing long-standing workflow requests from professional users.

Up to 6 Hours of Continuous Recording

Firmware 1.10 significantly extends the Nikon ZR’s maximum continuous recording time to up to 360 minutes (6 hours) per clip when shooting in non-RAW video formats.

This is a major upgrade over the previous 125-minute limit and makes the camera far more practical for long-form production such as interviews, live events, conferences, and documentary shoots.

It’s important to note that this extended recording limit does not apply to RAW formats, including R3D NE, N-RAW, or ProRes RAW, which retain their existing clip length limitations.

Even so, for filmmakers working with compressed codecs, this update dramatically reduces interruptions and simplifies on-set media management.

Wired Timecode Support for Multicam Productions

Firmware 1.10 introduces LTC timecode input support, accessible through the camera’s Timecode menu and routed via the external microphone or line input.

This allows the Nikon ZR to sync reliably with external timecode generators, making it much easier to integrate into professional multicamera environments.

RED-Style Video File Naming

Another filmmaker-friendly addition is a new video file naming system inspired by RED cameras. Clips are now automatically named with more descriptive identifiers such as reel numbers, clip numbers, and recording dates.

This improves media organization on set and speeds up post-production, especially when working with multiple ZR bodies or mixed camera systems.

Improved Exposure Monitoring for 12-bit Recording

When shooting in R3D NE 12-bit, firmware 1.10 adds a highlight warning indicator within the histogram and waveform displays.

This gives users clearer feedback on potential clipping, helping preserve highlight detail in high-contrast scenes and log-based workflows.

Additional Workflow and Usability Improvements

The update also includes several smaller but meaningful refinements aimed at day-to-day usability:

The power-on lamp energy saver option allows the status lamp to remain lit, making it easier to confirm power state on rigged or mounted setups.

R3D NE 12-bit recording can now be selected even when the camera is in AUTO mode, with the ZR automatically switching to Manual exposure.

LUT import has been expanded to allow viewing up to 50 LUTs from a memory card instead of just 10.

Minor text updates improve clarity around cloud connectivity features.

An audio noise issue during USB live streaming has been resolved, improving reliability for live content creators.

Firmware 1.10 solidifies the Nikon ZR as a more capable and production-ready cinema camera.

By extending recording times, adding wired timecode, refining exposure tools, and improving file organization, Nikon clearly targets filmmakers who demand reliability, efficiency, and professional integration.
