iPhone 17e in the Works? 4 Key Upgrades We Hope to See Over the iPhone 16e
Earlier this year, Apple finally unveiled a new, budget-friendly iPhone under a fresh name: the iPhone 16e, marking a shift away from the familiar “SE” branding. Previously rumored to launch as the iPhone SE4, Apple instead introduced the 16e — now its most affordable offering, priced at ₹59,900 in India. The device has been well-received, especially in markets like India and Japan, where more budget-conscious Apple devices see strong demand.
Now, rumors are starting to swirl about the next-generation model: the iPhone 17e. According to tipster Instant Digital on Weibo, the iPhone 17e is reportedly nearing trial production, with preparations for mass production already underway. This could be welcome news for those holding out on the iPhone 16e, hoping for a more refined update next year.
So, what should Apple do differently with the iPhone 17e? Here are four upgrades we’d like to see in the next version:
1. Bring Dynamic Island to the E-Series
The Dynamic Island has been around since the iPhone 14 Pro, and by now, it’s a defining feature of modern iPhones. Even though the E-series is meant to be more budget-friendly, it’s no longer “cheap” by most standards — the iPhone 16e still starts at ₹59,900. It’s time Apple brought this signature UI element to its most affordable line, making the experience feel more premium without encroaching too much on flagship territory.
2. Add Cinematic Mode to the Camera
One of the iPhone 16e’s biggest drawbacks is the absence of Cinematic Mode. While it does have a single-lens camera, other smartphone brands have shown it’s possible to include similar features even on modest hardware. With some software optimization, Apple could easily add this much-loved video mode to the 17e, giving users more creative tools without needing to spend on a Pro model.
3. Offer More Color Options
The iPhone 16e launched in just two shades: black and white — a missed opportunity for a phone aimed at broader audiences. Apple is known for its vibrant color choices across other models, so why not bring that energy to the E-series? Options like Product (RED), blue, yellow, or purple would add personality and appeal, especially for younger buyers or first-time iPhone users.
4. Increase the Display Size Slightly
The current 6.1-inch screen on the iPhone 16e might be a bit too compact for some users. A bump up to 6.3 inches, similar to the iPhone 16 Pro, could strike the perfect balance between usability and pocketability. It would also help the phone feel more modern without making it oversized or difficult to handle.
With the iPhone 17e reportedly in the pipeline, it’s clear Apple is continuing to evolve its entry-level lineup. If the company takes cues from user feedback and brings these upgrades, the next “e” model could be a far more compelling package.
