Motorola Edge 40 in for review

The Motorola Edge 40 has landed on our doorstep, ready for inspection. Just a month after the Edge 40 Pro’s release, Motorola presents the vanilla model, which comes in three striking colors: Eclipse Black, Nebula Green, and Lunar Blue. We’ve snagged the black model, and before we put it through the wringer, let’s give it a once-over.

The Edge 40 comes in an environmentally friendly box, recycled like last year’s Edge 30 Ultra. Inside, you’ll find a clear protective case, a SIM ejector tool, a USB-C cable, a 68W power adapter, and the usual documentation to get you up and running.

The smartphone’s centerpiece is a 6.55″ FullHD+ OLED display with a 144Hz screen refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling rate, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. It’s HDR10+ compatible, has a fingerprint reader for authentication, and a centered punch hole for the 32MP selfie camera.

The back of the phone boasts a squircle-shaped camera island, housing two LED flash modules, and two cameras – a 50MP primary lens (with OIS) and a 13MP ultrawide lens with autofocus capabilities for macro shots.

Our Eclipse Black model sports a rear panel with a vegan leather finish, similar to the Nebula Green model, weighing in at 171g. In contrast, the Lunar Blue version’s back cover has an acrylic plastic finish, weighing only 167g. All three models are IP68 dust and water-resistant.

The Edge 40 packs a Dimensity 8020 SoC, coupled with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, and runs Android 13 out of the box. We’re still waiting to hear about future Android upgrades.

Dolby Atmos and stereo speakers give the phone an immersive audio experience, and a 4,400 mAh battery keeps everything running. Charging is a breeze with the USB-C port, capable of up to 68W charging, while the smartphone also supports 15W wireless charging.

The vegan leather finish has a rubbery texture and a worn look, not everyone’s cup of tea, but we’re keeping an open mind as we dive into our review. Stay tuned for our verdict on this intriguing smartphone. And in the meantime, check out the review video below.
