The Next 4K Tiny Drone From DJI Fits in the Palm of Your Hand

Picture a drone the size of a small baby swallow—no need to specify whether it’s African or European. Chinese drone manufacturer DJI, which is also branching into e-bikes, may be on the brink of launching an exceptionally compact and budget-friendly drone, though it hasn’t hit the U.S. market yet. An unboxing video of the rumored DJI Neo suggests that this new drone might be very affordable, offering a cost-effective way to annoy neighbors.

Recent leaks, including a mistaken Walmart listing, hinted at a price of around $329 and 4K video capability. On Wednesday, an Italian YouTube channel, enontheroad (via Notebookcheck), shared an unboxing video of what appears to be the DJI Neo, spotted in Malaysia. The drone reportedly mirrors the design of the DJI Avata 2 but comes at a fraction of the price—less than $1,000 for the drone and goggle combo.

YouTuber Nicola Cortellucci estimates that the Neo will retail for around €199 in Europe, which converts to just over $228, though U.S. prices might differ. There’s also mention of a “Fly More” bundle, including an accessory pack, priced at €350 or $388—consistent with DJI’s usual pricing.

Another leak suggests the drone weighs just 136 grams (about 0.3 pounds), slightly heavier than the HoverAir X1, which costs $430. The Neo allows users to start recording 4K video directly from the drone with a button, bypassing the need for a controller or app. However, the DJI Fly app is still available for more advanced controls. The drone also features face recognition for unlocking. Cortellucci demonstrates in the video that the drone can be started from the palm of your hand, though the app is required for additional functions.

Without footage from the drone, we can’t gauge the effectiveness of its sensors or determine its obstacle avoidance capabilities. Given these limitations, the Neo might be best suited for outdoor use only. Plus, with its weight under 250 grams, it won’t require FAA registration in the U.S.

Just when we thought drones couldn’t get more intrusive, the DJI Neo promises to buzz around like a relentless wasp compared to the larger, bulkier drones in DJI’s lineup. DJI’s current entry-level drone, the DJI Mini 2, costs $280, weighs 280 grams (0.6 pounds), and needs a separate controller.

The unboxing video reveals that DJI has opted for minimalist packaging, including two bags and some spare propellers, with no controller included. Images from leaker Jasper Ellens on Twitter show a different package for the Fly More combo, which does include a controller.

According to Cortellucci, DJI plans to release the Neo around September 5. So, keep an eye out for this tiny drone making its debut in your neighborhood soon.
