Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 have now received FDA approval to function as over-the-counter hearing aids. This marks a groundbreaking moment, as it’s the first time a mainstream consumer device has been granted such authorization. The approval will be delivered through a software update, expected later this year, and will be available in over 100 countries.

At the event, Apple also highlighted the global impact of hearing loss, affecting approximately 1.5 billion people. To address this, Apple has designed an all-in-one solution for hearing health that includes several innovative features.
One standout is the Active Hearing Protection, which reduces exposure to loud environmental noises that can cause hearing damage over time. This feature operates across all listening modes by default.
Additionally, Apple introduced a self-administered Hearing Test, which works in conjunction with the AirPods Pro and a compatible iPhone or iPad. This clinically validated test, which mimics standard pure-tone audiometry, can be completed in just five minutes at home. Users receive a detailed summary of their results, including an audiogram, which is stored in the Health app and can be shared with healthcare providers for further consultation.
