Meta Smartwatch May Debut in 2025 with AI Features and Dual Cameras
Meta Platforms is reportedly revisiting its long-delayed smartwatch initiative, with a potential launch now targeted for September 2025. The wearable device is expected to incorporate built-in cameras and AI-powered features, and could function as a companion product to Meta’s upcoming smart glasses equipped with generative AI.
According to a report from DigiTimes, the timing of the device’s development appears to align with Meta Connect, the company’s annual developer conference scheduled for September 17–18 in the United States. Chinese electronics manufacturer Huaqin Technology is reportedly on board as the hardware partner.
Second Attempt at a Meta Smartwatch
This marks Meta’s second known attempt at building a branded smartwatch. The original project—codenamed “Milan”—first surfaced in 2021, featuring early design concepts that included a curved display, a front-facing camera, and a side-mounted physical button. By 2022, a prototype had emerged showcasing two built-in cameras: a 5MP front sensor and a 10MP rear sensor, housed in a gold-colored chassis with dual physical buttons.
Ambitions and Setbacks
The original smartwatch was being developed by Meta’s Reality Labs, with ambitious plans for neural input technology that could interpret wrist-based signals to control apps and features. However, technical complications—particularly related to the second camera—reportedly interfered with the neural input system. These challenges ultimately led to the project’s cancellation in June 2022.
Status Remains Unclear Ahead of Meta Connect
While the latest report confirms that Meta has resumed development on the smartwatch, it’s unclear whether the device will be formally introduced at Meta Connect 2025. This uncertainty is consistent with the project’s previously inconsistent timeline and shifting priorities within Meta’s broader hardware strategy.
Potential Market Impact
If released, the Meta smartwatch would mark the company’s official entry into the competitive wearables market, currently led by Apple and Samsung. Its unique integration of camera-based features and AI interaction could set it apart—especially if paired with Meta’s vision for an AI-driven ecosystem.
As of now, Meta has not publicly confirmed any details regarding the smartwatch’s specifications or release timeline.
